Driving Instructor Training
At Thumbs Up Driver Training we take your journey to your new career seriously, giving you value for money and ensure the course is well structured, and to maximise your time will guarantee your training will be on a one to one basis. You will receive support and assistance at every step along the qualifying process from potential instructor, through to qualifying as an approved driving instructor.
We have a holistic approach to your training, interlinking the three parts of the qualifying tests:
Part 1 – Prove you have the knowledge to teach pupils to drive.
Part 2 – Applying the knowledge you have gained in part 1, to demonstrate you can drive to a high standard.
Part 3 – Building on what was learned in parts 1 and 2, to show that you can teach a pupil in an effective, client-centred way.

How the training course is structured
Part 1 – Theory Test
Having a detailed knowledge of the theory is vital as a strong basis for a successful career as an instructor. Rather than leaving you to get on with it, as some training providers may do, we provide help and support with regular sessions during the part one training.
Using the part one study guide and the associated books, DVD and on-line theory, you will be provided with help and guidance with this home study element. To bring a lot of the theory to life, there will also be practical, in-car training.
You will be provided with:
- Up to 6 hours training, including driving and instructor training
- Part 1 study guide and 6 DVSA recommended books
- Theory/hazard perception DVD, Theory Test Pro
Part 2 – Driving Test
You will have already had your driving assessed by me at the beginning of the course. Although you may be an experienced driver, there is a possibility you have developed some incorrect habits, which you will now be aware of and will be practicing getting your driving to the required standard to pass this test. Some driving techniques have changed over the years, so it is important that you are brought up to date with these.
You will be provided with:
- Part 2 training workbook
- Up to 14 hours of 1-1 driver training
Part 3 – Instructing Test
I can assure you that your training will not be diluted by sharing the car with other trainees, as this can hinder your progress as not all trainees will be at the same standard. All your training will be 1-1 and structured to ensure you gain the most from your sessions.
Since December 2017 the part 3 test is now the Standards Check. The assessment will be based on the criteria set out in the Standards Check form (SC1) and the National Standards (NDSDRT).
You will be provided with:
- 45 hours training 1-1
- Instructor training workbook
- Lesson plans / visual aids book
- Briefings CD
